and Artist’s Reception at Taber Art Gallery
Work of Holyoke Resident Elise Howell-Snow Featured at HCC…
February 13,
2008
HOLYOKE – The public is invited to a gallery talk and artist’s reception for Elise Howell-Snow on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at HCC’s Taber Art Gallery. The talk is slated for noon.
Howell-Snow’s paintings and drawings are on exhibit now through Feb. 15 at the gallery in a show titled, “Slippery Situation.”
Howell-Snow is an awarding-winning artist whose work has been exhibited throughout New England, New York, Indiana and Virginia. She is a Holyoke resident and an assistant professor of art at Springfield Technical Community College.
“My stories are intimate situations and often accounts of a persistent anxiety,” she said about her paintings and drawings. “I am also interested in balancing beauty and tension, bridging the psychological and physical, investigating flatness and form, considering movement versus stillness, and background versus foreground.”
The Taber Art Gallery is
open to the public and located in the HCC Campus Library in the Donahue Building.

Auschwitz,
Dachau, and Mauthausen: The Concentration Camp Series
Photographs by Sondra Peron on view at Taber Gallery
February 19, 2008
HOLYOKE,
MA— Does a landscape have memory? Can we, after 60-plus years,
still see a place of great human suffering? How does an artist or photographer
capture an image of our collective historical memory of the Holocaust? Photographer
Sondra Peron, in her new exhibition, Auschwitz, Dachau, Mauthausen: The Concentration
Camp Series, on view at the Taber Gallery at Holyoke Community College beginning
Feb. 21, explores these questions and provides some answers.
The photographs will be
on exhibit at the Taber Gallery through March 14, 2008, with a talk scheduled
for March 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 pm.
Using vintage Kodak Hawkeye Brownie cameras dating from the late 1940s to early
1960s, Peron, a Northampton resident, traveled to the small town of Mauthausen
on the north bank of the Danube River in the summer of 2004. Photographs ranging
in size from 4 inches to almost 4 feet reveal an array of sights from forests
and gas chambers at three concentration camps used by the Nazis during WWII.
A special limited edition exhibition book, Mauthausen, accompanies the exhibit. Ten signed and numbered books contain 17-pigmented photographs printed by the photographer and custom-bound and slip cased by bookbinder Shoshannah Wineburg, also a Northampton resident.
Peron is an MFA candidate in photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She lives in Northampton and works for the Northampton Arts Council. For more information about Peron’s photography, please contact her directly at (413) 695-3196 or email sondraperon@comcast.net. High resolution photos available. www.sondraperon.com
The Taber Gallery is a non-profit exhibition space, open to the public and conveniently accessed through the HCC Campus Library in the Donahue Building. For more information and hours please call (413) 552-2614.

Holyoke Parents Called to Help
Their 8th Graders
Sessions for Parents of High School Bound Children at Peck and Lynch
February
26, 2008
HOLYOKE, MA — Holyoke Community College’s ENLACE
(Engaging Latino Communities for Education) initiative will hold an information
session tomorrow for parents of 8th grade students to help them prepare their
children for high school and ultimately, college.
“Moving Up to High School” will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Lynch Middle School for parents with children who attend the Sullivan E.N. White and Lynch schools. This session will feature a Hip-Hop, High School and Beyond event for 8th graders to meet with high school and college students while their parents attend the session. Eighth graders in the CHOICES After School program and their parents will be especially encouraged to attend.
“We want parents to know that today preparing for 9th grade is preparing for college,” said Isolda Ortega-Bustamante, director of ENLACE. “Your child’s 9th grade classes can begin to prepare him or her for college and your involvement will tell your child how important education is to his or her future.”
The session is designed
to equip parents with information to help their children make a successful transition
from middle to high school. Middle school counselors will be on hand to explain
to parents how and when their children will be advised about which high school
to attend and class choices. High School guidance counselors from Holyoke High
School and Dean Technical High School will speak at the second sessions to be
held in March at both schools. Materials will be available in Spanish and native
Spanish speakers will translate all English presentations.
.
HCC will provide transportation, childcare and dinner for participating parents.
ENLACE is a partnership between HCC, The City of Holyoke, The Holyoke Public
Schools, The Greater Holyoke Chamber of Commerce, Pioneer Valley United Way,
and other organizations. Funders include the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Massachusetts
Department of Education, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts,
the City of Holyoke, and HCC. For more information, call Isolda Ortega-Bustamante
