Transfer success featured in Chronicle of Higher Education
In an article entitled “Holyoke Community College Builds on its Transfer Tradition,” HCC was spotlighted in the December 14 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The Chronicle of Higher Education is one of the major news services in the United States academic world, publishing print and online news and feature articles about institutional leaders in higher education.
The article highlights HCC’s Pathways program, which helps promising students from low income and underrepresented groups transfer to selective institutions, including Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges, by offering counseling, academic support, financial aid workshops and mentoring.
The story also focused on HCC’s enhanced academic offerings, such as interdisciplinary Learning Communities, intensive courses that help prepare students for the rigors of a competitive four-year college.
Since its founding in 1946, HCC has maintained close ties with the area’s four-year colleges. Under Pathways, established with the help of Mount Holyoke and a $779,000 grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, more than 400 hundred students in the past three years have been served, with many transferring to four-year colleges or universities.
"These kinds of connections don't just happen," HCC President William F. Messner said in the article. "It takes hard work and focus for colleges to get students they wouldn't be attracting otherwise."
