Don't Trash Mass
HCC MassPIRG students are organizing for a zero waste future for Massachusetts.
On October 14, members of HCC's MassPIRG group set up an eyecatching geodesic dome on the upper courtyard, and invited students to volunteer for MassPIRG and take a pledge to reduce their carbon footprint. Here are a few things you can do to break the cycle of bury, burn, and waste.
- Reduce auto use and lower carbon emissions by carpooling, checking tire pressure, and avoiding unecessary trips.
- Drink tap instead of bottled water and save 52 lbs of carbon dioxide per year, or 2 lbs. per gallon jug.
- Reduce garbage 10% by recycling, and save 1,200 lbs of carbon dioxide per year.
- Reduce household energy use and carbon emissions. Did you know that almost half of the average home’s energy consumption is used for heating? Lower the thermostat 5 degrees and save. Another 17% is used for water heating; cooler water saves energy and will get you and your dishes just as clean.
- Reduce waste production by buying products with less packaging, composting food wastes, and recycling glass, plastic, metal and paper.
- Go to www.masspirgstudents.org and volunteer!
