What does diversity mean to you?

Diveristy to me means differences of all kinds -- race, culture, religion, gender, class, abilities. We are all unique and we can all learn from one another. It is important for an institution of higher education like HCC to demonstrate and embrace diversity because it is a tremendous strength and asset that we have. There are a lot of places that are not diverse, which sometimes can be a surprise since we are in a diverse community. We can practice what we teach, what we learn -- what else could be a stronger testament than proof?

Why is diversity important?

Diversity is important because it means that we are all included, we belong, we are accepted. We all want to be heard, seen, and to matter.

What inspires you?

What inspires me is seeing a student grow and come to believe in their own potential, their own possibilities. It is amazing to see them persevere through so much personal adversity to earn their degrees. It is humbling and it inspires me to do my job and to do it well!

What makes you happy?

I love good company, good conversation. I love to laugh and can appreciate a funny story. I love my family, but there is something about being greeted by a dog -- my shih tzu is always happy to see me and I love it!

What do you value about working at HCC?

That you get to work with very dedicated people here that know their stuff. I get to meet amazing students with unbelievable stories. I help students transfer to amazing schools, help them through the process, and freak out with them when they get that acceptance letter -- I love it!
