Title:

Senior Academic Counselor

What does diversity mean to you?

Diversity means valuing and promoting an environment of respect and inclusion for all.

Why is diversity important?

If people feel safe and included, they are more prone to succeed. Students can excel in a classroom; staff and faculty go above and beyond at their jobs. It is a win-win situation for everyone. As the only bilingual senior academic counselor on campus, I have the opportunity to meet with many of our Spanish-speaking students and be a support for them here at HCC. Also, as an openly gay staff person on campus, GLBTQ students know that they have a safe space where they can come out and share their struggles.

What inspires you?

Witnessing change in people on both academic and personal levels: meeting a student on academic probation and then seeing that same student graduate from HCC, with honors. Meeting a student and then telling me that I am the first openly gay Latina they have given themselves the chance to get to know and realizing that my family is just like theirs.

What makes you happy?

My wife, my family, my stepdaughters, my cat Frida, the beach, fine dining. I love to travel with my wife, especially to beach destinations.

What do you value about working at HCC?

The staff and faculty at HCC are who make our campus what it is. My colleagues who never say "that is not a part of my job" and always go the extra mile to ensure that our students are successful and amazing.
