Holyoke Community College EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, THE BUILDING FIRE ALARM SYSTEM WILL SOUND. ALL PERSONS MUST EXIT THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE. SECTION I - TO REPORT A FIRE/EMERGENCY All fires (or possible fires evidenced by smoke, the smell of burning materials, etc.) should be reported immediately as follows: * If you smell the odor of smoke or burning materials (or find evidence of another emergency of any kind) NOTIFY THE CAMPUS POLICE DEPARTMENT AT EXTENSION 2211 OR THE TELEPHONE OPERATOR BY DIALING "O". * If you observe flames and/or large amounts of smoke, or receive a report of such PULL THE NEAREST FIRE ALARM STATION. SECTION II - STANDARD FIRE SAFETY PLAN FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF ? Staff/faculty members will instruct students to leave the building quickly by following the evacuation route. The evacuation route is denoted by red EXIT signs in corridors and the posted evacuation route maps. DO NOT return for personal belongings DO NOT switch lights and electrical devices on or off DO NOT use elevators DO NOT re-enter buildings for any reason ? When the classroom has been emptied, the staff/faculty member, where practical, checks to see that all windows and secondary exits are closed and all gas devices are turned off. He/she then leaves, making sure the classroom corridor door is unlocked and closed, where practical, and exits the building following the evacuation route noted above. ? During evacuation, each staff/faculty member is charged with the prompt and safe exit of students, visitors, and of themselves. DO NOT REMAIN ON THE PATIO AREA—PROCEED IMMEDIATELY TO THE TENNIS COURTS OR ATHLETIC FIELDS. After evacuation remain a safe distance (at least 500 feet) from the buildings to ensure personal safety and to not impede emergency vehicles. Persons should evacuate to the closest of the following designated locations: K lot, tennis courts, athletic fields, south end (far end) of F lot. All campus “brick” patio areas must be evacuated. Stay in a designated location until the all-clear signal has been given by authorized personnel. Once safely out and clear of buildings, Facilities Department personnel are to choose a safe route and proceed to the vicinity of E building. If E building is deemed safe by the Director of Facilities, or designated representative, they should assemble in the lunchroom area and await instructions. SECTION III – FIRE SAFETY PLAN FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF WITH DISABILITIES ? Individuals who are ambulatory should follow instructions in Section II unless they require special assistance. ? Because certain areas of the campus do not offer immediate access to the outside ground level, five (5) locations have been designated as official evacuation stations for persons with disabilities. The stations are: Donahue 380, Donahue 416, Frost 387, C333 and Marieb 318. Under ADA regulations it is appropriate for individuals using wheelchairs to go immediately to these evacuation stations in an emergency. These locations are equipped with evacuation chairs for individuals using wheelchairs and call buttons to alert appropriate personnel if help is needed. Immediately press the call button, which will alert emergency personnel of the presence of persons needing assistance to evacuate the building. ? During the evacuation of any floor, each staff/faculty member is charged with the prompt and safe exit of persons with disabilities. ? Staff/faculty member is charged with escorting persons with disabilities to the nearest evacuation station and are encouraged to remain there with the person. ? Normally, the Director of Facilities, Campus Safety Officer or Manager of Building Services will dispatch available, qualified personnel to assist in the required evacuations. In their absence, the ranking Campus Police Officer present will assume this duty. The Campus Safety Officer will conduct annual training in evacuation chair procedures. ? Evacuation EvacuTrac volunteers should report to previously assigned areas and carry out evacuation procedures. If possible they should send a messenger to report the status of the volunteers in their assigned areas. It there is no one to evacuate at their assigned stations, volunteers should report to the flagpoles in front of the Frost building to verify their assignments. After evacuation, remain a safe distance (at least 500 feet) from the buildings to ensure personal safety and to not impede emergency vehicles. Persons should evacuate to the closest of the following designated locations: K lot, tennis courts, athletic fields, south end (far end) of F lot. Do not proceed to patio areas. Stay in a designated location until the Fire Department Chief has given the all-clear signal.
