Holyoke Community College Description

Founded in 1946 as the city-sponsored Holyoke Junior College, Holyoke Community College—now celebrating its 60th anniversary—is an accredited, public community college serving students from Western Massachusetts and beyond. Eighty percent of HCC’s credit students reside in the Western Massachusetts communities of Springfield, Holyoke, Chicopee, Westfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Northampton, Easthampton, South Hadley, Ludlow, Belchertown, Southwick, Amherst, and Southampton.

Classes and services are offered at HCC’s 135-acre campus in Holyoke, Massachusetts and at satellite locations throughout the Pioneer Valley. HCC's business and workforce development programs are housed in the new Kittredge Center for Business and Workforce Development, a 55,000 square foot facility completed in spring 2006.

Serving almost 9,000 credit students annually (and over 4,000 annually in noncredit courses and programs), HCC, in the most recent report published by the Board of Higher Education, boasts the largest enrollment among Western Massachusetts community colleges and awards the second highest number of associate degrees and certificates of all 15 Massachusetts community colleges. HCC’s tuition and mandatory fees rank the third lowest of all Massachusetts’ public higher education institutions.

HCC offers 76 associate degree options and 41 certificate programs, as well as adult basic education/GED programs, education and training for business and industry, and noncredit community service programs. To accommodate students’ busy lives, HCC offers classes during the day, evening, on weekends, and online.

Academic programs, in a variety of disciplines, are designed for immediate career entry or for transfer to four-year institutions. Among the 15 community colleges in Massachusetts, HCC boasts the highest number of students transferring to four-year colleges and universities, many with full scholarships.

Beside small class sizes and personalized attention from faculty and staff, students enjoy classrooms and laboratories equipped with the latest technology, competitive varsity athletic teams, the David M.Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation, a wide array of student clubs and activities, and Commonwealth Honors and Coordinated Studies programs, among many other programs and services.

Throughout the year, HCC is home to a variety of recreational and cultural activities for students and the larger community. The college’s strongest assets are its innovative spirit, sincere concern for students, and vigor to strive for greater success. These are values which have created a tradition of excellence spanning five decades, and which enable Holyoke Community College to meet the challenges of the future.
