Professor , Melinda Hawkes
(formerly Mesick)M.S., Computer Science
Degree
and from where it was received:
M.S. in Computer Science, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
B.S. in Business Administration, Northeastern University
Courses you teach:
Programming and Webmaster courses as well as general interest courses.
I love teaching in areas that require critical thinking skills.
It is not easy but it is usually fun.
Accomplishments (personal or professional): Have taught in China and in
Ukraine. Also worked as chair of Professional Development committee for several years (this is my fourth).
Got married in summer of 2007 (thus the 2 names above).
Favorite thing about teaching: Having taught at a big university (UMass - large
lectures), I find that being able to interact on a more one to one basis very fulfilling. I also enjoy
the great variety of students we have at HCC - it adds to the richness of the classroom and online
experience.
Memorable moment at HCC: There are so many - every time a student has that "ah - ha"
moment in a difficult class. Hearing from former students - what they are now doing. I can't pinpoint
one moment.
Teaching philosophy: It has to be fun and it has to relate to everyday life, but
good teaching helps the students develop their ability to learn more than anything else.
