The Accuplacer college placement test is a computerized assessment of basic math, reading, and writing, and is required of all students who intend to study at HCC. Along with your acceptance letter, you will receive an appointment to take your test at HCC's Assessment Center. After the test, you will meet with an advisor to select and register for your classes.
Testing takes approximately two hours. If you have a disability and require special accommodations to complete the placement test, please contact the Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services (OSDDS) well in advance of the appointment. (Please note: Appropriate documentation of your disability must be provided prior to receiving special accommodations.)
You may access testing information, including sample questions, by downloading this information booklet. Other websites that may be helpful for review are: www.math.com, and www.accuplacer-test.com. HCC does not endorse and is not responsible for the content on these sites.

Holyoke Community College offers a wide array of online courses and recognizes that a robust online community is comprised of students from across the country, and often the world! Many online courses require placement test scores as a registration prerequisite for students who have not previously completed a college level English or math course. For the convenience of our online students, HCC offers admitted students the opportunity to complete the assessment off campus, and outside of Massachusetts. Please read and complete the following documents to begin the process.
HCC Guidelines for Remote Testing
Student Remote Test Request Form
Test results are good for two years. If you completed the test as a Tech Prep student, you do not need to re-take this test. If you have successfully completed a college-level freshman English course, you do not need to take the reading and writing assessment. If you have successfully completed a college-level mathematics course, you do not need to take the math assessment. In order to be exempt from the test or certain components, you must forward a transcript of your grades to the Admissions Office at HCC.
Biology Challenge Exam
If you plan on taking Biology 217 (Anatomy and Physiology I) and have a strong background in biology, you may attempt to bypass the pre-requisite by taking the Biology Challenge exam. For more information please contact the testing center at (413) 552-2055 or firstname.lastname@example.org for an appointment.
Students who plan to take PHY 111 (Physics for Engineering and Science majors) during the spring semester must first successfully complete PHY 101 or pass the physics placement assessment prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
