The CPT (College Placement Test) is a computerized assessment of basic math, reading, and writing, and is required of all students who intend to study at HCC. Along with your acceptance letter, you will receive an appointment to take your test. After the test, you will meet with an advisor to select and register for your classes.
Testing takes approximately two hours. If you have a disability and require special accommodations to complete the placement test, please contact the Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services (OSDDS) well in advance of the appointment. (Please note: Appropriate documentation of your disability must be provided prior to receiving special accommodations.)
Test results are good for two years. If you completed the CPT as a Tech Prep student, you do not need to re-take this test. If you have successfully completed a college-level freshman English course, you do not need to take the reading and writing assessment. If you have successfully completed a college-level mathematics course, you do not need to take the math assessment. In order to be exempt from the test or certain components, you must forward a transcript of your grades to the Admissions Office at HCC.
Biology Challenge Exam
If you plan on taking Biology 217 (Anatomy and Physiology I) and have a strong background in biology, you may attempt to bypass the pre-requisite by taking the Biology Challenge exam. For more information please contact the testing center at (413) 552-2055 or spaquette@hcc.edu for an appointment.
Physics Placement
Students who plan to take PHY 111 (Physics for Engineering and Science majors) during the spring semester must first successfully complete PHY 101 or pass the physics placement assessment prior to the beginning of the fall semester. To schedule the physics placement assessment, please call (413) 552-2055 or spaquette@hcc.edu for an appointment.
