
Holyoke Community College's Adult Basic Education (ABE) Programs provide basic skills instruction in math, writing, and reading to adult learners in order to prepare them for jobs or higher education. These programs can be found at a number of locations throughout Western Massachusetts.
ABE Transition to College & Careers (ABE TCC) is a free, non-credit program offered both day and evenings that helps students 18+ prepare for college and identify a career path. Includes intensive academic preparation in English reading and writing, math, study strategies and computers in a college context in a supportive learning community environment. Bilingual student support, career counseling, tutoring and mentoring are integral parts of our program.
The Ludlow Area Adult Learning Center helps adults learn English and offers other support programs. This free program serves adults in the Ludlow/Indian Orchard area who are immigrants or refugees. Students have ranged in age from 17 to 70+.
The Picknelly Center provides Holyoke residents with adult basic education and related services in an easily accessible downtown location. It offers GED preparation and testing, Adult Basic Education, and English for Speakers of Other Languages classes. Other services include tutoring and mentoring, career counseling, workforce development classes, transition to college programs, and credit college classes taught by HCC instructors.
A center to promote technology literacy and support the education and workforce programming of the PAFEC, the technology center offers free and low cost basic computer and software classes in English and Spanish. It also provides free open sessions for the general public, lab space for adult basic education (ABE) and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classes, GED preparation, Accuplacer (college placement) prep courses, as well as a career readiness certificate pilot program and Basic Essentials Skill Training for the Workplace (BEST) program.
Established in 1990 by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, SABES provides comprehensive training and technical assistance for ABE (Adult Basic Education) educators and programs throughout the state. The SABES western regional office at PAFEC provides teacher training in math, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and writing curriculum.
