Documentary Photography [C]
This course involves learning the visual language of documentary still photography. Students will develop their own stylistic approach to photographing cultural, social, political and personal issues relevant to our lives today. Students will practice the camera and editing skills needed to create a series of photographs and organize them into a cohesive visual statement. Along with multiple photographic assignments geared to the creation of a documentary portfolio, students will study the traditional photographic essay, the cultural history of documentary photography, contemporary documentary criticism and the ethical challenges that arise through the act of photographing the world. Students may choose to produce work using film or digital processes. Prerequisite: ART 140.
