The Modern Novel [C]

PREREQUISITES: Prerequisite: ENG 102

We will study significant novels that explore aspects of modern society. Emphasis might be on American novels of the Twenties and Thirties (Fitzgerald, Cather, Glasgow, Faulkner, Wolfe, Steinbeck); experiments in British fiction (Forester, Joyce, Woolf, Lawrence); the ethnic American novel (Yezierska, Tan, Morrison, Baldwin); the international novel (Camus, Garcia-Marquez, Mahfouz, Achebe, Kafka). Each semester the instructor will determine the focus. Prerequisite: ENG 102
