Ed Stathis, in the studio at WCCH, the campus radio station

Ed Stathis

Hometown:

Springfield, Mass.

Major:

Communications

Activities:

Writing Group / Radio Club, WCCH 103.5 (DJ) / No Shame Theater

Favorite course/teacher:

I have not had an instructor or professor at HCC that I didn't like. Every class has offered me an opportunity to learn something new. I take the holistic approach to my education; all of the parts are needed to be complete.

Most meaningful encounter at HCC:

I would have to say the ABE Transition to College and Careers and New Directions programs, especially the people who work there. If it had not been for ABE TCC, which is free, by the way, I would have been lost in my first semester here at HCC. They really know how to get a student preprared for a degree program. New Directions helped make sure I got all the financial aid benefits I'm entitled to as a U.S. Navy veteran.

Why does education matter to you?

I'm curious. Education satisfies my curiousity. If I wasn't enrolled in college, I'd still seek out knowledge in one form or another. It could be from a book, or listening to a speaker on the radio, or watching a documentary.

What is your favorite thing about HCC?

I really love the arts, whether it's being in a painting class, writing a script for No Shame Theater or doing a broadcast on the campus radio station. I find those activities the most satisfying.

Advice for fellow students?

Choose a path that genuinely interests you. If you love what you're doing, you will be successful. You will also like yourself a whole lot better than if you sell out and pick an occupation that is meaningless to you. Make decisions from the heart and use your head to make it work out.

Where are you going from here?

After I graduate from HCC I plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in communication at a four-year college, possibly Westfield State University. I'd like to find a job working as a writer in radio or television.
