Heather D. Sabin

Title: Awards Show Curator

Heather D. Sabin '93 is the awards show curator for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive in Los Angeles. In this role, she is responsible for the film, videotape and digital files relating to all of the awards shows produced by the Academy, including the Scientific and Technical Awards and Student Awards as well as the Annual Academy Awards shows. Her work involves identifying elements and inventorying, cataloging, barcoding, scanning and shelving them, as well as evaluating older elements for migration, preservation, and deaccession (removing work from the archive). In her prior position as nitrate archivist, she inventoried more than 5,000 cans of 35mm nitrate film within the 20th Century Fox Studio deposit.

In 1996, Sabin received her B.A. in communication and a certificate in film studies from the University of Masschusetts in Amherst. From 1996-1998 she served as an Americorps corpsmember in San Diego and then as an Americorps community services assistant in Urbana, Illinois. In 2001, she earned her M.S. in critical studies in film and television with a specialization in moving image archive studies from UCLA, and in 2002 she received a certificate in film preservation at the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation at the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y.

"I chose to put HCC in my estate plan because I'd reached the age where I was finally starting an IRA, and I wanted to know that if something happened to me, that money would go someplace special. I wish I had enough money now to be able to give more to HCC to start a scholarship, but I just don't make that much as a non-profit worker. Knowing HCC is the beneficiary of my IRA makes me feel better because I know HCC will get the money then that I wish I could be giving them now. HCC means so much to me because it made me like school again. I had such great professors and such interesting classes that it made me want to excel. It set me up to succeed at UMass and later UCLA.
