James Deats in The Bunker

James Deats

Hometown:

Westfield

Major:

Engineering

Favorite class/teacher:

Prof. John Sullivan. He teaches my calculus classes and Discrete Math (that's about mathematical patterns and figuring out different ways to do things). He's the best math teacher I've ever had. He has a simple approach to things and builds off basic examples and extrapolates different problems from those.

Most meaningful encounter at HCC:

Going to the Bunker and meeting other veterans and other people from different branches of service who have all gotten out and are choosing different career paths. I go down there to hang out and study sometimes.

Why does education matter to you?

Getting an education is just something my mom always impressed on me as a kid. I like to learn. I first started college classes in ninth grade. From there I figured out what I wanted to do and joined the Marine Corps to pay for it. I joined knowing that I was going to get out and go to school.

What is your favorite thing about HCC?

Veterans Services is really good. Cindy MacDonald, the former coordinator, is really good. She helped me last semester with classes, making sure all my veterans services benefits had been certified and that my financial aid is good.  A lot of times I just go in there to talk to her. To see how she's doing. She's been a big help.

Where are you going from here?

I'm going to transfer to UMass-Amherst and double major in electrical engineering and chemical engineering.
