Jeffery Anderson at HCC

Jeffrey Anderson-Burgos

Resides in:

Holyoke

Major:

Liberal Arts - Sociology Option

Favorite class or teacher:

My advisor, associate professor of anthropology Vanessa Martinez, has been particularly influential because she encouraged me to take a leadership role I didn't believe I was ready for. That role has blossomed into many other roles and opportunities.

Most meaningful encounter or event:

The ability to take a class paper and turn it into a campus project. I wrote a research paper about cell phone recycling and now we are recycling cell phones through the Sociology-Anthropology Club to raise money for an HCC Foundation scholarship.

Why does education matter to you?

I feel education is important because it gives you the ability to expand on what you think you already know and what you want to know more about. The education I've gotten here at HCC has not just been what I've read in textbooks, it's really been about the whole experience, whether it's being involved with the student senate, being involved with new students coming in for orientation, or finding passions in class projects that have gone beyond just writing a simple paper. I have become a version of myself I didn't know existed because of the amazing encouragement and opportunities I have received as a student at Holyoke Community College.

What is your favorite thing about HCC?

The numerous avenues for getting involved outside of the classroom, offering chances for personal growth and advancement.

Where are you going from here?

My plan is to move on to UMass-Amherst to major in political science and minor in psychology.
