Resides in:

Monson (grew up in Somerville)

Major:

General Integrated Studies

Favorite course/teacher:

My favorite courses have been psychology, but my favorite teacher is my Spanish professor, Raul Gutierrez. It's not the typical student-teacher relationship. He doesn't treat you like a student; he treats you like you're a person. When he tells stories, he sometimes refers to himself in the third person, which I find hilarious.

Most meaningful encounter at HCC:

As a veteran, I'd say the Veterans Day services on campus the two years I've been here. They've always done something for veterans and even though the turnout isn't always the best, just the fact that they acknowledge the sacrifice of veterans is important.

Why does education matter to you?

The easy answer is you can't really get a good job without it. But, to me, it's important because my mother and father never went to college. Getting a degree is sort of a stepping stone, another milestone in life, another thing to be proud of.

What is your favorite thing about HCC?

My favorite thing is the number of nontraditional students, the students who are here later in life and the number of students who are veterans. I feel like I have much more in common with them.

What's the most important thing you've learned at HCC?

The most important thing I've learned at HCC is good study habits. I'm a huge procrastinator and I really didn't realize that until I got here. Coming here you realize you can't just do enough to get by. You sort of have to go all or nothing.

Where are you going from here?

I'm going to study social work at Western New England University for my bachelor's degree and Springfield College for my master's. My ultimate goal is to be a social worker for the VA (Dept. of Veterans Administration). I feel like there needs to be more veterans helping veterans.
