The HCC Alumni Association held a reception in honor of State Rep. Aaron Vega Monday in the PeoplesBank room in the HCC Kittredge Center for Business and Workforce Development.
The first-time legislator, a democrat from Holyoke, was elected last November. He is a 1990 graduate of HCC and the father of two daughters who are now students at the college.
"We're delighted Aaron has been elected. Two or three months on the job and we've already seen Aaron in action," said HCC President William Messner. "One thing has particularly impressed me: He's a quick learner. I have no doubt he's going to do a great job representing you and representing Holyoke Community College."
After introductory remarks from President Messner, Vega spoke about his election, vision and legislative efforts.
"We're trying to make Holyoke a place where people to live, a place to work and a place to grow their businesses," Vega said. " Our job is to broadcast what's good about our community. When they make decisions in Boston about money, about programs and about supporting businesses, it's my job to make sure we're represented."
Vega serves on the state house public higher education committee and emphasized the importance of early childhood education and changing the story of Holyoke so more people stay in the area.
"The best way to increase our political power is to bring more people to western Massachusetts," he said.
