Holyoke Community Earns Big Win Over Quinsigamond CC
HOLYOKE, MA - The Cougars posted ten runs Wednesday afternoon in a must-win home game against the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College. HCC punched their ticket to the postseason behind six strong innings from freshman righty Zak Florek (Westfield) and three solid innings of relief from sophomore Anthony Ortiz (Amherst).
After the Wyverns took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Cougars plated five runs in the third starting with a 2-run home run by sophomore 3rd baseman Tommy Cowell (W. Springfield). Later in the 3rd, sophomore Sam Farnsworth (Westfield) put Holyoke ahead with a 2-run double followed by a RBI double by freshman David White (S. Deerfield).
Trailing 6-2 in the 6th, Quinsigamond looked poised to make a comeback when their first three batters reached, loading the bases with no outs. HCC made quick work of the next two batters as freshman shortstop Clayton Beaulieu (Chicopee) caught a pop up at short for the first out before converting an un-assisted double play on the following ground ball.
In the bottom half of the 6th, sophomore 1st baseman Karl Kapinos (S. Hadley) added some insurance runs with a 2-out 2-run double that hit the top of the right field fence and came back into play. Quinsigamond would add single runs in the 7th and 8th but couldn't close the gap as the Cougars won by a final score of 10-4.
With Wednesday's regional win, HCC secured a spot in the New England Division III postseason tournament to be held at Massasoit Community College May 4th, 5th and 6th.
The Cougars have three regular season games remaining beginning with Eastern Connecticut State University JV today at home at 4 p.m.
