The Holyoke Community College Theater Department's Spring 2014 production of Living Out is being considered for inclusion in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

The play by Lisa Loomer, which was presented at HCC in April, was designated as "held for consideration" by the regional board of directors for the KCACTF, based on the recommendation of Scott Gagnon, chair of the KFACTF Institute for Theater Criticism and Advocacy, who attended a performance at HCC.

"I am delighted to convey this honor on Living Out, as I found it to be a warm, sincere presentation of an important script with an equally important social message," Gagnon wrote to HCC theater professor and Living Out director Patricia Sandoval. "Congratulations again on such a successful production!"

According to Gagnon's message, only 10-15 college productions are "held for consideration" out of more than 100 productions that are viewed by KCACTF respondents each year. Of those, five or six will be invited to the annual festival.

Earlier this year, Sandoval said she chose the play for the Theater Department's spring production because it wrestles with the issues that are central for many women -- motherhood, career, family. The play tells the story of Ana, a nanny from El Salvador, who goes to work for a new mother returning to work herself as a lawyer.

"This is huge!" said Sandoval. "I mean, we are up against four-year institutions with big bucks. We won't know until November if we get selected to go to the festival but being 'held" means we need to keep our stuff because they are considering the show to be a finalist."

The term "held" means that the college is being asked to retain its set, costumes and other materials for a possible encore performance at the KCACTF Region One festival in Hyannis in January 2015.

"Even if your production is not selected for an encore performance," Gagnon wrote, "the 'held' designation itself is an honor and you should be very proud of your show and its distinguished cast and crew."
