Holyoke Community Drops Home Game Against Mass Bay
HOLYOKE, MA - Coming off their first win of the season Saturday at UCONN Avery Point, the Cougars hosted a 9-4 Mass Bay team at People's Bank Gymnasium Thursday night. The length of the Bucaneer big men proved to be too much as Mass Bay came away with the 85-65 victory, handing HCC their fifth loss of the young season.
From the beginning it was apparent that both teams wanted to get up and down the floor, as there was a quick pace to the game. Five minutes in, the Bucs enjoyed an early 4 point lead (8-4). By the 12:26 mark the Cougars had cut that lead to just 2 (12-10) before calling a time out. Sophomore forward Glenn Bovino (Chicopee) hit a 3-pointer out of the time out that put the Cougars up 13-12. Bovino's 3 sparked an 8-4 run out the time out, giving HCC a 18-16 advantage with 9:53 remaining. Mass Bay was then forced to use a time out in an effort to slow down the Cougars. Aggresive defense including 2 blocks from freshman center Cyrel Lopes (New bedford) helped keep the Bucs at bay, resulting in a 26-26 tie with 5 minutes remaining in the first half. The score would again be tied, this time at 30, before Mass Bay took a 37-32 lead into the break.
The Bucs continued to dominate the glass in the second half, getting second chance oppurtunities and scoring off put-backs. By the 15 minute mark, Mass Bay had increased their 7 point halftime lead to 9. Sophomore guard Carlos Ortiz provided a spark off the bench for the Cougars, scoring 15 points, 13 coming in the second half. Down 59-45 midway throught the second half, the game started to slip away from the Cougars. Mass bay would go on to earn the road victory against a Holyoke team that never gave up but came up short in the end.
HCC's leading scorer, freshman guard Ruben Delrosario (Springfield; 17.3 ppg), once again led the Cougars with 16 points to go along with 6 assists. Carlos Ortiz contributed a season-high 15 points off the bench.
Mass Bay's Nate Nunez led all scorers with 18 points.
The 1-5 Cougars will take on Massasoit Community College this Saturday in Brockton at 3 p.m. The next home game for HCC is Tuesday against Bristol Community College.
