Holyoke's halftime lead doesn't hold up as Bunker Hill squeezes out a win
HOLYOKE, MA - HCC gave an impressive performance against a talented and deep Bunker Hill team on Saturday afternoon but was outscored 47-34 in the second half as the Bulldogs slid past the Cougars for a 76-69 win.
Forcing five turnovers by the 16:14 mark in the first half, the Cougars had built a 7-4 lead. Freshman Ruben Delrosario (Springfield) scored eight of Holyoke's first ten points including two 3-pointers, good for a 10-7 lead with 4:32 gone by.
Sophomore Carlos Ortiz (Hamden) converted identical and-1's on back to back possesions after picking up loose balls under the basket and going up strong in traffic. The Cougars shot 45% from the floor in the opening half and never trailed as they entered the locker room with a 35-29 advantage.
The Cougars maintained their lead until the 8:30 mark in the second half when a Bulldog 3-pointer knotted the score at 58-58. Bunker Hill would go on to outscore Holyoke 18-11 down the stretch and take home a 76-69 win.
Holyoke Community shot 81% from the free throw line as a team (13-16) while Bunker Hill shot 24% (4-17).
HCC freshman Denzel Washington (Springfield) scored a season-high 14 pts. on 67% shooting (6-9) while Delrosario led all scorers with 19 pts. Carlos Ortiz and Isaac Linton (Holyoke) contributed 17 pts. and 11 pts. respectively.
Nathan Qualls-Betts led the Bulldogs with 18 pts.
The Cougars will travel to Northern Essex Community College on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip.
