Cougars Fall to Gateway CC 80-60
HOLYOKE, MA - The Cougars of Holyoke CC fell to the Gateway CC Lions 80-60 in last night's season opener at People's Bank Gymnasium. The Cougars recieved a strong performance from freshman guard Ruben Delrosario (Springfield) who led HCC with 19 points and 6 assists.
Holyoke jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to start the game before Gateway quickly countered with a scoring streak of their own. Gateway had took control of the lead by half-time with the scoreboard reading 42-33 in favor of the Lions.
The Cougars kept things interesting in the second half behind 5 three pointers; three from Delrosario and two from sophomore guard Xavier Ortiz (Orlando, FL) who had 11 points on the night. Freshman forward Eloy Figueroa (Holyoke) and sophomore forward Zachary Nonnally (Springfield) each chipped in 8 points, but it was the Cougars' 17 team turnovers that contributed to the eventual loss. All things considered, the Cougars gave an impressive showing in the first game of the 2011-12 season against a very talented Gateway team that likes to get up and down the floor.
Jerome Perkins led all scorers with 30 points for the Lions while eight other Gateway players contributed to the scoring column.
HCC will travel to Worcester on Thursday evening to face another regional opponent in Quinsigamond CC at 7:30 p.m.
