Southern Maine Edges Out Holyoke Community in Final Seconds

HOLYOKE, MA - It took Seawolves guard Josh Mackie's 9th 3-pointer of the game for Southern Maine Community College to squeeze out a two point victory over Holyoke Community College Wednesday night at People's Bank Gymnasium.

The Cougars opened the game on a 7-0 run before the Seawolves closed to within one (11-10) with five minutes gone by.  Midway through the opening half, freshman guard Ruben Delrosario (Springfield) drained two 3-pointers in a row, cutting into the lead that Southern Maine had earned and bringing the Cougars to within three (26-23) at the 7:55 mark.

Out of a time out, HCC grabbed the lead for the first time since the opening minutes when freshman guards Isaac Linton (Holyoke) and Ruben Delrosario converted back-to-back fast break lay ups for a 35-34 advantage with 3:10 remaining on the first half clock.  In the final seconds before halftime, Delrosario drove the lane and dished to sophomore guard Carlos Ortiz (Hamden) who layed it in for a 37-36 lead at the break.

Holyoke Community maintained their lead until the 7:17 mark of the second half when Southern Maine drew even with a 3-pointer, knotting the score at 58-58.  With the Cougars up 70-68 with 40 seconds on the clock, Southern Maine's Mackie swished a three from the corner, giving the Seawolves a 71-70 lead.  Up one, the Seawolves would commit a back court violation on their next posession, giving the ball back to the Cougars with 19 seconds left.  Off the in-bound pass, Ruben Delrosario drove the lane and hit a tough floater, putting Holyoke back on top,

With 4 seconds left, Southern Maine looked to Mackie once again.  Mackie knocked down his 9th three, giving him 27 points on the night to lead all scorers.  The Cougars' Ortiz had a decent look at a corner three, but it rimmed out as the buzzer sounded and Holyoke Community came up just short, falling to the Seawolves 74-72.

Ruben Delrosario led the Cougars with 21 points while the Seawolves' Josh Mackie led all scorers with 27.

The Cougars host Massasoit Community College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
