Cougars face formidable opponent in Dean College
HOLYOKE, MA - Following Tuesday's 73-71 win over Lincoln College of New England, courtesy of a last second buzzer beater by sophomore Eloy Figueroa (Holyoke, 11 pts.), the Cougars hosted a Division II opponent in Dean College on Thursday night. HCC would not get the opportunity to repeat Tuesday's heroics as the Bulldogs led throughout and took home the 63-45 victory.
Holyoke applied pressure early, forcing nine Bulldog turnovers in the opening half but converting only two turnovers into points at the other end. The Bulldogs shot 50% from the floor in the 1st half on 16 of 32 shooting, tallying 34 points at halftime, good for a 34-15 lead entering the break.
The Cougars came out strong in the 2nd half from the behind the arc. Sophomores Jose Gonzalez (Holyoke) and Eloy Figueroa (Holyoke) drained 3-pointers on the first two Cougar possesions as HCC pulled to within 15 points of the Bulldogs. This is as close as they would come however, despite scoring twice as many points as they did in the 1st half. The Bulldogs, who lost earlier this season to the Lincoln College team that the Cougars defeated on Tuesday night (also 73-71), earned a 63-45 win to move to 13-7 while the Cougars drop to 3-16 overall.
The battle of the boards was close as Dean pulled down 44 total rebounds while Holyoke grabbed 39.
HCC freshman Ruben Delrosario (Springfield) led all scorers with 14 pts and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Figueroa followed up Tuesday's perfomance with 12 pts.
Dean's Tyshawn Carter and Andrew Roberts led the Bulldogs with 10 pts. each.
The Cougars host Bunker Hill Community College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
