Scrappy Play Moves Bristol CC Past Holyoke 2-0
(Holyoke, MA) The Holyoke Community College men's soccer team (0-1) was in action again today versus regional opponent the Bristol Community College Bees in their first game of the season. The Cougars look to improve upon yesterday's loss to Adirondack Community College in their first Region XXI Division III match-up.
In a chippy back and forth first half which saw several yellow cards, Bristol CC freshman Corey Correia turned a Cougar's defensive mis-clear into a goal with 5:38 remaining in the half. The Cougar's six shots on goal were not enough and the half closed with Bristol ahead 1-0.
With coach Abel Durojaiye asking for his team to be more proactive and aggressive, HCC threatened in the opening minute of the second half with a scramble in front of the Bristol net. For the second time in the game, Bristol's defense bailed out their keeper and cleared a shot on an open net. Moments later, Holyoke's Nick Edele intercepted a defensive pass inside the penalty box, firing a shot just over the crossbar for the Cougar's second major threat in the opening minutes of the half. With tough back and forth play, Bristol's Walace Lopez hooked a perfectly placed direct kick from the left side around the Cougar's wall to the near post past diving keeper Patrick Lawless at the 14:33 mark. The shot put Bristol CC up 2-0 while Holyoke's Nick Edel, Dale Fermi, and Nima Kamal continued to press the Bristol defense. Holyoke was not able to find the back of the net and Bristol CC pulled out their season opener with a 2-0 win over the Cougars.
Holyoke will be back in action next Saturday September 7th at Roxbury Community College. Their next home stand will be Saturday September 14th at 3PM versus Mass Bay Community College.
