Late Comeback Not Enough
(Holyoke, MA) The men's soccer team faced off against Mass Bay Community College today in the second of a doubleheader with the women's team. The Cougars came out with a noticable sense of urgency and looking to score early. Striker's Tom Cusak (Adelaide, S.Australia)and Adam Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) led the attack in the first half, nearly missing on an open net opportunity that was cleared away inches from the goal line by a Mass Bay defender. Mass Bay first year Dennis Ntagozera struck with an impressive laserbeam shot from about 35 yards out into the high right corner just below the crossbar.
The perfectly placed high right corner shot looked as thought it would be enough, as the Cougars were not able to capitalize for 74 minutes of the game with 16 shots. Just as it appear the game was over, Holyoke's Adam Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) knocked home a loose ball bouncing around in front of the net off a Jonah Vaclavicek (Southhampton, MA) throw in that sailed across the field to the front of the net. The equalizer was scored with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation, forcing a golden goal overtime.
Holyoke's celebration seemed turn the momentum their way giving way to several great opportunities in front of the Mass Bay net. Holding off the Cougars last minute attack, Mass Bay capitilized on the Cougars pressure, sending a long ball over the pushed up defense to first year John Marcal. Marcal attacked down the field in a breakaway opportunity and netted the golden goal with 48 seconds remaining. Two last minute goals were the difference maker in this game, and unfortunately the Cougars did not come out on top posting a 2-1 overtime final score.
The men's soccer team is back in action Wednesday September 18th versus rivals Springfield Technical Community College. They move to 1-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in regional play.
