Late intensity surge not enough for Cougars
(Holyoke, MA) The men's soccer team started off sluggish today against a tough Massasoit Division III Region XXI opponent. Sophomore Emerson Barros fed by Edmar Vieira put Massasoit on the board six minutes into play. Ten minutes later, the Cougar's found themselves down 2-0 after Joao Cardoso scored the second goal of the match, assisted by Barros. Trailing by two, but with 74 minutes to play, the Cougar's slowly began to chip away at the Massasoit attack, countering each strike. Adam Goncalves ricocheted a shot off the top left corner or the goalpost on a beautiful strike from outside the twenty. The rebound left a Cougar striker with an open net who was unable to control the header back at the net, popping the ball over the crossbar in the 35th minute.
Back and forth play ensued as the game began to get physical, ending with three total yellow cautions in the match. The Warriors struck again extending the lead to three in the 59th minute of play as Wagner Amarante assisted Adilson DaRosa. HCC Keeper Patrick Lawless (Joondalup, Perth) had six tough saves on the day, one more than Warrior goalie Andre Reis. The Cougar's intensity began to pick up as the clock ticked down. In the 70th minute, Trevor Corallo (Windsor Locks, CT) put HCC on the board, scoring off the assist of Tom Cusack (Adelaide, S. Australia). In the following minutes, Tyler Erdahl (Chicopee, MA) drove a shot across net from the right side nearly missing the top left corner. Liam Swindells (Logan, Queensland) sent multiple corner kick opportunities into the box, as well as Jonah Vaclavicek's (Southhampton, MA) throw in's, to threaten the opposing goalie but were never able to capitalize.
With a tough fought match, the Cougar's 3-1 loss puts their record at 2-4-0 in Division III Region XXI play. Saturday they will face Bunker Hill Community College at 1PM in Boston.
