Lady Cougars Move To 6-3 Overall With Home Win Thursday Night
HOLYOKE, MA - Four Lady Cougars put fourth double-digit scoring efforts against the NAPS last night to give Holyoke Community their 6th win of the season. A balanced scoring attack and aggresive defense including four drawn charges contributed to the 64-52 HCC victory at People's Bank Gymnasium.
HCC put themselves on the board early with 2 consecutive baskets from freshman center Jenn Perry (West Springfield) at the start of the game. Five minutes in, the Lady cougars had opened up a 12-2 lead. Navy Prep didn't score their second basket until the 12:30 mark as they struggled from the field in the first half, converting only 6 shots. The free-throw line helped fuel a 7-2 NAPS run to close out the first half, cutting the Lady Cougar advantage to only 6 points at halftime (26-20).
Handling the ball for the majority of the second half and taking most of the shots, the Navy Prep offense ran through point guard Katrina Bernal. Bernal contributed 7 points to a 9-2 NAPS run to open the half, giving Navy Prep their only lead of the game at 29-28. Sophomore guard Alicia Carter (Easthampton) stopped the bleeding with 3 consecutive layups within a 1:15 span. HCC went on to score 10 un-answered points resulting in a Navy Prep time out. With 10 minutes remaining, the Lady Cougar lead was only 7 (46-39). However, Holyoke was able to keep the pressure on and finally close the door on the NAPS for a 64-52 victory.
Navy Prep's Katrina Bernal led all scorers with 22 points.
Holyoke Community moves to 4-1 at home, 6-3 overall. The Lady Cougars will travel to Brockton this Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against regional opponent Massasoit Community College before returning home for 2 games next week.
