Lady Cougars stumble despite double figure scoring efforts from four of five starters
HOLYOKE, MA - A slow start hurt the Lady Cougars Saturday night against the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College and their fast paced offense. Alicia Carter (Easthampton) and Steph Picking (Wales) led the way for HCC with 19 points and 18 points respectively, but Quinsigamond came away with the 75-61 win at People's Bank Gymnasium.
The Lady Cougars didn't convert a shot from the floor until 5:02 into the game when Carter hit a 3-pointer, cutting into the 9-1 lead that the Wyverns had established early. Quinsigamond was consistently able to get out and run for fast break opportunities resulting from Holyoke turnovers in the first half.
Jess Santiago (Holyoke) would cut the Cougar deficit to just five (18-13) on a baseline lay-up with 7:00 remaining until the break. This is as close as HCC would get as Quinsigamond took a 35-25 lead into halftime and then cruised in the second half en route to a 75-61 victory.
Saturday's loss was the second against Quinsigamond this season and the Lady Cougars' fifth loss in their last five games overall. HCC will face another tough test this Thursday when they host the Huskies of Uconn Avery Point who defeated the Lady Cougars in Groton, CT earlier this season 74-34.
