Holyoke Community Outscores Bunker Hill
11-5 in Overtime, Win 76-70
HOLYOKE, MA - With 1.4 seconds left in regulation, Bunker Hill's Kristine Giunta made two free throws, tying the score at 65 and forcing Saturday's regional game between Holyoke Community and Bunker Hill Community into overtime. The Lady Cougars would then outscore the Bulldogs 11-5 in overtime to grab a 76-70 victory and complete the season sweep of Bunker Hill.
After trailing 30-26 at the half, HCC scored six quick points on two lay-ups from sophomore Alicia Carter (Easthampton) and a basket in the post by freshman Anastasia Walker (West Springfield), forcing an early Bunker Hill timeout. With 7:30 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs turned the ball over and then fouled freshman Steph Picking (Wales) on her way to the basket, sending her to the line where she made two free throws, tying the game at 50.
The score would become tied once again, this time at 53-53, when sophomore Jess Santiago (Holyoke) took advantage of a mental mistake on behalf of the Bulldogs by throwing the baseline inbound pass off the back of the defender and converting the quick lay-up. There would be five more lead changes before the Bulldogs forced overtime with the scoreboard reading 65-65 at the end of regulation.
In the extra period, Santiago single-handedly outscored Bunker Hill with seven of her career-high 23 pts. coming in overtime while Picking scored four of her 19 pts. in OT to secure a 76-70 victory.
The Lady Cougars out-rebounded the Bulldogs 10-2 in overtime and shot 42% from the floor while Bunker Hill shot 33% in the extra frame.
HCC's Santiago led all scorers with 23 pts. while Picking and Carter each poured in 19 pts. Walker contributed a double-double with 10 pts. and 10 rebounds.
