By Matt Patenaude
HOLYOKE, MA - The Lady Cougars lost a hard fought game against a notable opponent in Montgomery College-Rockville of Maryland on Sunday. Entering Sunday's match, the Cougars sat at #3 in the National NJCAA Division III poll while Montgomery-Rockville was positioned two spots back in 5th place. Montgomery-Rockville got on the board early and maintained their lead throughout as Holyoke suffered their second loss of the season.
Holyoke trailed 1-0 at halftime before going down 2-0 at one point in the second half. Sophomore forward Alicia Carter (Easthampton) gave the Cougars a spark with her 11th goal of the season late in the second half. It was a booming kick from well outside the box that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the top right corner of the net, assisted by freshman defender/midfielder Jenn Galindo (Chicopee). Montgomery-Rockville would add another goal shortly after, securing their victory.
The Cougars played tough against an impressive opponent on Sunday, particularly freshman midfielder Laura Masciotra (Agawam) who had a nose for the ball all game. HCC goalkeeper Malynda Riopelle (Springfield) made 9 saves while Montgomery-Rockville stopped 7 Cougar shots. The Cougars fall to a still impressive 9-2 overall.
HCC looks to remain perfect in Region 21 action on Wednesday when they host regional opponent Bunker Hill Community College at 3:30 p.m.
