HCC staff and faculty members strapped themselves into wheelchairs this week for a pickup game of wheelchair soccer. The game,. played in the Bartley Center gym, culminated a day of professional workshops Wednesday, Jan. 23, that focused on disability services at HCC and how to incorporate universal design into curriculum and programming.
Under the direction of STRIVE Learning Specialist Denise Roy, STRIVE staff practiced their wheelchair soccer skills and competed in a wheelchair soccer competition against the Wild Wheels team from CHD Disability Resources in Springfield. The CHD program is run by HCC alum Nancy Bazanchuk, '95, who also serves as coach for the Wild Wheels. STRIVE competitors included Roy, Denise Salgado, Joan Giovannini and Nancy Nelkin. HCC team colleagues included Academic Counselor Mary O'Connor and Anthropology professor Vanessa Martinez.
