Soccer improves to 2-0 in Region 21
(Holyoke, MA) Dominating possession throughout the game, the Cougar's improved their Division III Region 21 record to 2-0-0 with a 3-0 win over Massasoit Community College Saturday afternoon. The talented Cougars proved precision passing and persistent attack would lead to opportunity. With 2 seconds remaining in the first half, sophomore captain Kristy Cominoli (Northfield, MA) beat the clock and Massasoit diving keeper to put HCC up 1-0 ending the half.
The second half was much of the same, challenging the Massasoit keeper and beating her two more times in the half. Center midfielders Devon Wolfenden (East Longmeadow, MA) and Nikki Callini (West Springfield, MA) used some fancy footwork to find a streaking Tai Lopez (Springfield, MA) through the middle of the field. Setting up a one on one situation with the Massasoit keeper, Lopez scored the Cougars second goal with 15 minutes to go in the game. Minutes later, Cominoli connected with Bre Line (Ludlow, MA) who scored the Cougars third and final insurance goal.
Keeper Amanda Olson (Hadley, MA) posted her second shut-out of the season. Defensive backs Kristina Mullin (Chicopee, MA), Emily Langlois (Agawam, MA), and Kaley Donovan (West Springfield, MA) can be credited for Olson seeing limited action, only having to make one save in the contest. They have remained solid in the Cougars campaign, clearing the backfield and supporting the attack of the Cougars offense.
The Cougars improve to 3-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Region 21 Division III action. The ladies next game is Wednesday September 18th at rival Springfield Technical Community College.
