(Holyoke, MA) Women's soccer continued to dominate their competition today with a 3-1 win over the visiting Springfield College Junior Varsity squad. The talented and athletic Springfield squad gave the women a solid game, scoring their lone goal in the first half. With the score 1-1 with under a minute remaining in the first half, HCC's Devon Wolfenden (East Longmeadow, MA) collected a corner kick sent across the net by midfielder Jess Teodore (Southwick, MA), sending a her well placed shot past the diving Springfield keeper. On the back of hardworking Wolfenden's two goals each assited by a Teodore corner, HCC entered the second half and never looked back.
Back and forth play saw several opportunities for each team. Tai Lopez (Springfield, MA) made a tremendous play through the middle to beat the Springfield defense, however, a spectacular diving play by the Springfield keeper saved what would have been the 3rd goal for the Cougars. The Cougars saw great pressure up from from striker Norma Reyes (Springfield, MA) charging the net and putting pressure on the Springfield keeper on their way to ten shots on goal. The Holyoke attack kept the pressure on and were unable to capitalize until just under 12 minutes remaining in the game. Standout Nikki Callini (West Springfield, MA) scored the insurance goal on a brilliant run through the middle of the field, beating numerous defenders to create a one on one opportunity leaving the Springfield keeper hopeless as she scored the 3rd HCC goal.
With a final score of 3-1, the quality and intelligent play of the Cougars helped them in maintaining solid possessions the entire game. They played simple passes to open players and created numerous opportunities for runs streaking down the sideline and crosses to crashing players. The Cougar's defense was once again led by center back Tina Mullin (Chicopee, MA), Kristy Cominoli (Northfield, MA) and Kaley Donovan (West Springfield, MA) turning away would-be opportunities the athletic Springfield team created. The team's defense deterred the Springfield attack, but they were still able to launch 7 shots at keeper Amanda Olson (Hadley, MA) who gets another win in net.
The women improve to 9-4-0 overall and take on rivals Springfield Technical Community College Wednesday, October 16th at home on O'Connell Field.
