Two First Half Goals Lift Cougars to District Championship
(Holyoke, MA) Capturing their sixth New England Championship (Region 21) in the last eight seasons, the Cougars are off to play Suffolk Community College (Region 15 Champions) Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. The winner of that matchup will advance to the NJCAA Elight 8 round games. Saturday's match-up with Massasoit Community College was the third time the teams have faced-off this season, finishing with no different outcome. September 14th the teams squared off at Holyoke with the Cougar's edging the vistors in a 3-0 win. One week after, the Cougars travelled to Massasoit and came away with a 2-0 victory. Saturday's game brought a higher level of intensity as the outcome would crown the 2013 New England Champions.
Focused and determined to get back to District and National play, Holyoke scored two second half goals to deflate Massasoit's hope of an upset. Massasoit was unable to score on Holyoke keeper Amanda Olson who posted five saves in her 8th shutout of the season. Much credit can be given to the solid backfield play of Tina Mullin, Kristy Cominoli, and Kaley Donovan who have been strong all season thwarting the efforts of opposing offenses. The consistent midfield of Jess Teodore (2 assists), Nikki Callini (1 goal), and captain Devon Wolfenden helped the Cougars to control possession for much of the game helping to advance the onslaught of attacks resulting in 14 shots on goal. With trips down the field and play inside the 18 yard line, the 0-0 halftime score would not stand.
Jess Teodore found Bre Line for the game winning cool and collected volley to the back of the net. Teodore again went to work, this time connecting with one of her favorite targets Nikki Callini for the insurance goal. Teodore herself sent a shot from the left side of the field, perfectly placed to the top right corner of the net over the diving Massasoit keeper, but the officials would recall the goal on a disputed offsides penalty.
The two second half goals were enough though, as the lady Cougar's have been crowned 2013 Region 21 New England Champions. They will travel to take on number 8 ranked Suffolk CC today at 2:00 pm.
