Favorite course/teacher:

That's tough. I've loved every professor I've had, which is magnificent. We have a great faculty here. I took a history of animal advocacy class with Diane Beers my first semester that was enlightening. She's really great. She's really passionate about what she teaches. I love that. I took a five-hour drawing class on Fridays with Ray Larrow, and that was just fantastic. That was my first college art class.

Most meaningful encounter at HCC:

I got my high school diploma here through Gateway to College. I was in tears. Getting my diploma was absolutely important to me. I wasn't going to finish high school before I came here.

Why does education matter to you?

So many reasons. The obvious things, where it opens up job opportunities. For me, it's just really enriching and it's amazing looking back at myself and how I've changed, and I think education had a lot to do with that. It's helped me grow and I feel like it's helped me mature. Nevermind that it's so much fun. Ridiculous amounts of fun.

What is your favorite thing about HCC?

The professors are really passionate about what they teach. I just find that fantastic. It's just made my experience so much better.

What courses are you taking this semester?

Figure Drawing, Drawing Composition, Printmaking, Art History II, College Composition II, and Sociology: Intimate Relationships, Marriage and Family. That's six. A little bit tough, but I'm pushing.

Advice for fellow students?

Get involved in your classes. Don't just drift through. If you look at your schedule as a checklist, taking classes just to get your credits out of the way, I don't think you're going to have a good experience. If you look for things you're interested in and look at each course as a fantastic new experience, you will get a lot more out of your education.

Where are you going from here?

I have my heart set on this fantastic little art school in Portland, Maine -- Maine College of Art. It's right in downtown Portland, which is a fabulous area. I love it. It makes me giddy.
