Women's Soccer Continues Regional Dominance
Women's soccer pummels N.E. rival.
The Lady Cougars, who currently sit atop the New England (Region 21) standings, traveled Saturday to square off against the region's second-place team, Massasoit CC. The two sides played each other in Holyoke earlier this season with the Cougars emerging victorious by a 3-0 score. The two programs have met in the New England championship game for the last three years, with Holyoke being crowned as champions all three times.
The Lady Cougars dismantled their regional rival on Saturday as eight different starters scored goals on Holyoke's way to a 10-0 victory. Allie Zollo (Monson, MA/Monson HS) led the way for the Cougars scoring a hat trick, which included a beautiful reverse flick off of a corner kick. The three-goal performance was Zollo's first collegiate hat trick as she continues to thrive from her center midfield position. Natalie Galindo (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee Comp) had a goal to go along with three assists, with all four of her scoring plays coming off of corner kick or free kick situations. Jenn Galindo (South Hadley, MA/Chicopee Comp), Liv Neiswanger (Holyoke, MA/Cathedral HS) and Reilly Jodoin (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley HS) each scored a goal while also assisting on another. Defenders McKenzie Wilson (South Hadley, MA/Smith Academy) and Beky Herring (Springfield, MA/Palmer HS) shutdown the opposition while pitching in offensively with a goal a piece, Herring's being her first of the season. Emma Gomes (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow HS) scored a goal and Allie Stuetzel (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam HS) tallied two assists. MyKaela O'Connel (Brimfield, MA/Palmer HS) was in the goal making two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
The Cougars are a perfect 6-0-0 in the New England region with all six wins coming by shutout. They have scored 45 goals in their six regional games. In addition, Holyoke is on an eight game winning streak, which is the second longest winning streak in women's soccer program history. The Lady Cougars play their next game away from home as Holyoke travels to Troy, NY to take on a very strong Hudson Valley CC team this Wednesday at 4 p.m. Let's go Cougars!
