Holyoke Community College will once again be offering five weeks of free Spanish language films during its fourth annual Ibero-American Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 27 to Oct. 25. All films are free and open to the public and will be screened in HCC's Leslie Phillips Theater in the Fine & Performing Arts building, with other showings also scheduled for Wistariahurst Museum and the Holyoke Public Library.

All the films are subtitled in English.

The festival opens on campus Wed., Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. with "Neruda," a story of Cold War intrigue set in Chile in 1948 and involving renowned poet Pablo Neruda and follows Oct. 4 with "Tempest," a documentary about two women struggling to overcome violent lives; the third film, "Ixcanul, Volcano," tells the story of a young Mayan girl rebelling against an arranged marriage; "El rey de Once" - The Tenth Man - is a romantic comedy; the Oct. 25 finale, "Truman," tracks a dying man's efforts to find someone to care for his dog.

"This year, we wanted films that depict strong figures; the two middle ones, in particular, feature strong female leads," said HCC professor Raul Gutierrez, one of the festival organizers, "and we've expanded the festival again this year to include several dates in downtown Holyoke."

The festival is sponsored by the HCC LISA Club (Latino International Student Association), the HCC Foreign Languages Department, the HCC Community College Public Humanities Center, and the Spanish Film Club by Pragda.
