Volleyball Triumphant in Must-Win Games
Lady Cougars Qualify for Regional Tournament
(Holyoke, MA) - The Lady Cougars volleyball team won consecutive must-win home games on back-to-back nights to earn a spot in the New England Championship Volleyball Tournament. Holyoke defeated Mass Bay CC 3-0 in straight sets on Monday night before a thrilling five set 3-2 victory over Quinsigamond CC on Tuesday. The Cougars needed to win both games to finish in the top four in the regional standings and qualify for the New England Championship, which will be hosted by HCC.
The Lady Cougars were dominant on Monday and served extremely well against their opponents both nights. Angely Arroyo (Holyoke, MA / Paulo Friere HS) and Nicole Gomez Bautista (Springfield, MA / Sci-Tech HS) led the way, sending over countless powerful serves that were very difficult for the opposition to handle. Arroyo and Gomez Bautista each tallied several aces over the course of the two matchups. Team captains Glenysbeth Andino (Springfield, MA / Sci-Tech HS) and Aysha Miller (Springfield, MA / Chicopee HS), two of Holyoke's most powerful hitters, both played tremendously in the back-to-back wins.
The Cougars finish the regular season 4-6 overall and in the region. They enter the New England Championship as the #4 seed and look to upset #1 seed Massasoit CC in the semifinal round. The New England Championships will be held at the Bartley Center at HCC on Sunday, October 27th. Holyoke will play in the first semifinal at 11am. The second semi matchup will be played at 1pm and features #2 Northern Essex CC squaring off against #3 Quinsigamond CC. The New England Championship will follow at 3pm with the winners of the two semifinals facing off for the regional title. Let's go Cougars!
