Lady Cougars Dominant in Regional Opener
Women’s Soccer Strong in Shutout of Rival
(Springfield, MA) - The Lady Cougars leapt into regional competition in dominant fashion, dismantling their local rival Springfield Technical CC 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at STCC. This was Holyoke's first game of the season against a New England competitor.
Returning sophomore defender Kari Little (Amherst, MA / Amherst Regional HS) led the way for the Lady Cougars, sparking the offense in the first half. Little scored a goal shortly after setting one up, both just a few minutes after moving into a midfield position to help Holyoke's attack. Forward Mary Glasheen (Holyoke, MA / Holyoke HS), who leads the Cougars in goals, assists and points this year, scored a pair of goals and tallied two assists. Jessie Payne (Monson, MA / Monson HS) and Gab Robert (Monson, MA / Monson HS) each registered a goal and an assist. Gabby Petlock (Southampton, MA / Smith Vocational HS) and Lizzy Zollo (Monson, MA / Monson HS) each scored a goal and Steph Robert (Monson, MA / Monson HS) had an assist playing in her first game of the season. Goalkeeper Hannah Garon (Monson, MA / Monson HS), who has played brilliantly all season, made two saves, earning her first collegiate shutout.
The Cougars, who have won seven consecutive New England Championships, are 1-0-0 in regional competition this season. Holyoke's New England record over the past seven seasons is 69-1-1 and this year's team looks to continue the program's regional dominance. Let's go Cougars!
