'My HCC Story' – Harry Hill '13

Harry Hill

'HCC ultimately gave me a career. I had graduated from Springfield College with a bachelor's degree in marketing in 2010 and found a low-paying job in finance at Wells Fargo among all of the door-to-door sales positions that were available.

After being laid off twice in two years, I decided to apply to HCC for their certificate program in graphic design. Professor Beverly Wodicka interviewed me, and I was accepted. I loved my art classes at HCC and learned so much about the foundations and beauty of design. I received the certificate at the end of 2013, and started my design career at the American Lung Association as their regional designer.

Within two years, I applied for a job as a graphic designer in the Marketing office at HCC. I had literally started as a student just trying to succeed in this game called life. Now, I design for the institution.

HCC was my ticket out of poverty – point blank. HCC provides opportunities for folks like me who were down on their luck and filled with hopelessness. That HCC certificate gave me the freedom and confidence to navigate my arduous journey. No more carrots and celery for dinner."

Harry Hill lives in Chicopee.
