ESOL and AESL Course Placement

English as a Second Language course placement 

If you have not already, meet with the Academic English as a Second Language department first. They will meet with you to review your goals, help you apply to the college, and comprehend your next steps. Once you are ready for the English assessment, the assessment will take place in the Assessment Center in Campus Center (CC) 164.  Please fill out this form to receive more information about the English assessment.  

The English assessment is untimed. Take as much time as you need in each section listed below.  

  • Reading Comprehension 
    • 20 multiple-choice questions; choose a, b, c, d
  • Listening Comprehension 
    • 20 multiple-choice questions;  choose a, b, c, d 
  • Language Use (grammar
    • 20 multiple-choice questions;  choose a, b, c, d
  • Writing
    • You will create an essay using the computer, and you will read a passage and an assignment on the computer screen.  
    • Here is a list of the parts of an essay in North America.
      • 5 Paragraph Essay
        • Each paragraph has 5 sentences
        • 1st paragraph:  introduction (who, what, when, where, how, why, and your purpose for writing the essay) 
        • 2nd, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs are the body of the essay.  Make a connection from the introduction to each of the 3 body paragraphs.  (2nd paragraph: who and what.  3rd paragraph: when and where.  4th paragraph: how and why.)  
        • 5th paragraph:  conclusion.  Let the reader know you are at the end (finally) and restate what you wrote in the introduction but use different words.
