Student Government

The Student Government Association (SGA) represents the voice of the students to the administration of the college. We provide and promote a partnership in governance among all segments of the college community. Throughout the year, the SGA plans and participates in activities and events that contribute to the college and the surrounding community.

Joining the Student Government Association

The SGA holds elections annually in the spring semester for the upcoming academic year. Vacancies may also be filled throughout the year.

  • Executive Board: Students who have served as a Senator at Large for at least one semester are eligible to run for a position on the Executive Board (President, Vice President, Secretary, Social Media Communication Coordinator, or Treasurer).
  • Senator at Large: Any Holyoke Community College student who meets the eligibility requirements can run for the position of Senator at Large.
  • Senator Representative: Any Holyoke Community College student who meets the eligibility requirements can run for the position of Senator at Large.

How to Run and Vote: Information regarding the election cycle, including Declaration of Candidacy forms, deadlines, and the link to vote, is announced via campus-wide communications (such as the Week at a Glance) leading up to and during the election period.

Executive Board: To run for an executive position, students must meet the following general requirements:

  • Currently enrolled at the college with at least 1 credit
  • Been in SGA for one or more semester 
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5*
  • Recommendation from a staff or faculty member*
  • Completed application form

Senator at Large Requirements: To run for a Senator position, students must meet the following general requirements:

  • Currently enrolled at the college with at least 1 credit
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0*
  • Recommendation from a staff or faculty member*
  • Completed application form

*First semester students are exempt from the GPA and recommendation requirements.

Senator Representative Requirements: To run for a Senator position, students must meet the following general requirements:

  • Currently enrolled at the college with at least 1 credit
  • Cumulative GPA under 2.0*
  • Recommendation from a staff or faculty member*
  • Completed application form

*First semester students are exempt from the GPA and recommendation requirements.
