These techniques can be used to make searching library databases more efficient and effective.
Boolean Operators: the use of AND, OR, NOT to combine search terms. Here's each one explained.
OR is used to search for multiple terms expressing the same concept.
Example: to search for humans aged 11-19, you might use:
teenagers or adolescents or teens
AND is used to combine concepts and narrow search results to only those containing all of them.
Example: to find research on how multitasking affects our cognitive performance, you might use:
multitasking AND (attention span OR cognitive performance)
NOT is used to exclude specific things
Example: to find research on PTSD that is not related to the military, you might use:
(PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder) NOT veterans
Parentheses are use to group concepts and have been used in the examples above. This specifies how concepts should be combined.
Example: to search for research about how social media is affecting teenagers, you might use:
(teenagers or adolescents or teens) AND (social media OR snapchat OR instagram OR tiktok)
Note: if parentheses were not used, the search is ambiguous and could find all articles containing teenagers in addition to all articles containing adolescents in addition to all articles containing teens AND social media and so on.
Quotation marks: use to designate multiple words are a phrase (words in exactly that order)
Example: "community college"
Truncation: Use an asterisk (*) to match all words beginning with part of a word.
Example: behavio* = behaviour, behavior, behaviors, behavioral
Wildcard: Use an asterisk to match a letter (or letters) within a word.
Example: wom*n = woman, women, womyn
