Great Gatsby Matinee
HCC Theater brings Fitzgerald's Gatsby to stage
The HCC Theater Department will present The Great Gatsby, a play by Simon Levy, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, April 11-13, 2024.
The show, directed by HCC Theater Professor Patricia Sandoval, will run nightly at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, April 13.
All performances will be in the Leslie Phillips Theater, in the HCC Fine & Performing Arts Buidling.
Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous novel. Despite initially tepid sales, the book went on to sell more than 25 million copies. Four film adaptations of the book have appeared on the screen, most recently in 2013 directed by Baz Luhrmann, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Simon Levy's stage adaptation was first performed at the Guthrie Theater in 2006 and was approved by the Fitzgerald estate.
The Plot
Having come east to learn the bond trade, Nick Caraway finds himself immersed in the roar of the Jazz Age. It's not long before his enigmatic neighbor, Jay Gatsby, enlists Nick in a plot to reconnect with his lost love. That lost love is Nick's married cousin Daisy Buchanan. But just as they find each other again, tragedy arrives with the unbearable heat of August.

Running time is approximately two hours with one intermission
