Communication, Media & Theater Arts
From the stage of the Leslie Phillips Theater...
...to the digital labs of the Media Arts Center, HCC students work and learn in an environment that is innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary. CMTA programs are designed to foster critical thinking and creative problem-solving, while ensuring that students have the technical expertise they need to be successful after graduation.
what will you do in cmta?
- Polish your communication skills while you investigate the impact of media on society and individuals
- Explore emerging media and technology, and master the digital tools
- Express yourself in one-act and full-length productions on the stage of the Leslie Phillips Theater
- Create your own program of study, drawing from communication, media, theater, and other disciplines
The ability to communicate, collaborate, and creatively solve problems are valued skills in any career field. CMTA students acquire these skills through hands-on, student oriented classes that nurture critical thinking, encourage creative problem solving, and impart effective communication principles.
The CMTA department offers three areas of study: the communication option, the theater option, and the CMTA integrated studies option. Students follow a flexible course of study to prepare them for transfer to a four-year institution or immediate entry into the job market.

The Communication option provides a foundation in the understanding of communication within society and in our everyday lives. This program is suited for students who wish to pursue careers in the fields of:
- Public Relations
The goals of this program are both skill-based and analytical: to foster effective communication in diverse social situations and to develop an understanding of the media institutions, media history, and the effects of media on society as well as individuals. This program prepares students for transfer to a four-year school.
The Theater Program provides students with foundational training and study in theater arts, including acting, technical theater, theater history, voice, and movement. The concentration offers production opportunities and course work that provides students with the ability to express themselves through performance and the skills necessary to translate theatrical literature into onstage production elements. Theater is an interdisciplinary program that will prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or for entry-level positions in semi-professional and/or professional theaters.
The Integrated Studies Option allows students to tailor a program of study to fit their unique interests and professional and academic goals. Working with a departmental advisor, students select courses from Communication, Media, Theater Arts, and other disciplines. Courses are chosen that will provide the best foundation for transfer to a four-year institution or entry into the job market.

i really loved stage craft, which was an incredible chance to learn, hands-on, literally how theater is made, like nuts and bolts and hammers and saws made. that's just something that had never even occurred to me i'd be learning."
